Photo Voter ID at Center of Senate Debate
The potential fight over the two-thirds rule in the Senate could bring focus on the important issue of voter identification front and center much earlier in the session than we thought. Proposed new laws requiring voter identification aren't necessary because Texas law already requires voter identification when voting in person. New requirements for voter identification would put a financial burden on some voters making it more difficult for them to exercise this fundamental right.
What is being called a voter fraud deterrent is really a solution in search of a problem. Since Texas tightened its voter identification requirements in 2003 we have seen no incidents of voter impersonation.
